The hounds’ typical physical features are the long skull, low set, moderately long, droop ears, large eyes, a muscular body, and curved tail. The dogs of this breed normally come in two different height classes: the hounds that are 13 inches and under compete in the 13 inch class and the hounds that are over 13 inches but not more than 15 inches tall compete in the 15 inch class. Nowadays, these hounds still actively participate in hunting sports. They are also good at agility, conformation and other competitions, but rarely excel in obedience. A purebred high quality dog can be expected to live 12 to 15 years. Playful and lively, these dogs normally do well with children.

These hounds are considered one of the smallest of the hunting dogs. Compact and athletic, they have short weather resistant coats, so they don’t need any special grooming. With this breed, training must be started early. Otherwise, the hound’s uncontrolled active and energetic nature will lead to messy behavior in the future.
