Beagle pictures

Beagles were developed in Great Britain for hunting the hare and the rabbit. They had a good sense of smell and could easily be traced in the field. It may be that the breed got its name from a French word "beigh" that means "small." The Celtic word "beag" similar in meaning could also be the origin of the breed's name.

The British are famous for their passion for hunting. They are credited with the production of many hunting breeds that were a helping hand during a hunting session. It was the case with Beagles too. Hunters exercised the breed's abilities and valued it for its working qualities and personality traits. Yet, Beagles could not compete in agility with other hunting breeds of dogs and, therefore, did not enjoy much popularity.

However, due to the efforts of breed fanciers, the Reverend Phillip Honeywood and General Richard Rowett of Carlinville, the breed was improved and emerged as one of the best hunting dogs. In the 19th century, American breeders imported well-balanced Beagles from Great Britain. The dogs became the foundation stock of many brilliant breeding lines.

The much-improved breed attracted attention of dog lovers. Its numbers grew constantly in the United States, which allowed forming a breed club. The National Beagle Club of America appeared at the end of the 19th century. The standard was drawn that marked a turning point in the development of the breed. From that time on, breeders have been expected to confirm to the ideal picture to produce sound Beagles.
